I was very fortunate to find a bundle of
old burlap feed bags at my local antique shop.
The very same burlap our traditional rug hookers
'used up and made do' for their hooked mats.

My Mom would ravel the burlap bags to use as
hooking material when there
weren't enough 'suttles'
to complete her rug.  It makes for a very primitive look.

Scraps of the burlap 'Cafeteria' feed and grain bag became
the base for this primitive 'make do' penny rug.
Leftover pennies from many projects complete the
'hit and miss' style pattern with simple butcher string
dyed to 'disguise' the need of 'store bought' thread.

The make do and use up traditions of my Grandmother and
Mother are still evident in my own rugmaking.
However,  the true skill of the 'make do' style is to fool the eye,
to make new from old and to not show the need for 'store bought'.
